LOOKING FOR THE MORNING AFTER PILL?
Call 1-800-804-8868 for information.

The morning-after pill is a form of emergency contraception,
or birth control, that prevents a woman from becoming pregnant
after she has had unprotected vaginal intercourse. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the morning-after pill is 80% effective. In most cases, the morning after pill can be used within 72 hours of unprotected sex, but the sooner it is taken, the more effective it is in protecting against pregnancy.

Morning-after pills (ECPs) are not to be confused with the “abortion pill”, otherwise known as RU48, mifestone, or Mifeprex. According to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, “EC is not an abortificant because it has its effect prior to the earliest time of implantation.” Since they act before implantation, they are considered medically and legally to be forms of contraception.

The morning-after pill should only be used occasionally, in the event of regular contraceptive failure. It is not suggested as a method of regular birth control. Emergency contraception will not prevent pregnancy if a girl has unprotected sex after taking the pills.

The morning after pill is considered very safe. There are no contraindications to its use, and no physical exam is necessary prior to use. In the U.S., Plan B is available to women 18 years and older without a prescription at most pharmacies. This development was a result of active encouragement from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Medical Association (AMA) to make the morning after pill available over-the-counter, without a doctor’s prescription. If you are interested in obtaining the morning-after pill or speaking to a doctor about using it, simply go to the drop down boxes above and click onto your country, state, and/or city. You will then see a list of organizations, physicians and clinics that provide the morning after pill.
